Moneybot

2024

An app to organise household spending, and manage owed money.

When it came to bills, food and other expenses as part of renting with friends, there was an opportunity for a helpful app.

Very quickly after moving in, there was confusion around who had paid who, who'd last chipped in for food, and if that promise to 'pay that back when I'm paid' ever happened.

I needed a system which would allow us to log two types of event - when we'd paid for something, or when we requested money from someone else. It aimed to reduce doing bill-splitting on the fly and in a much more accurate way.

In fact, the 'bill splitting' feature was the most powerful. For example - if a food shop came to £100 and one person paid for it, they can log on Moneybot that they paid £100, then choose to 'Split' - select the other two people - and submit. This will reduce their paid amount to £33.33, and create two new 'owed' events, both for £33.33, for the other two.

(Technically, for this example, the currency library I used would make one of the payments £33.34, to make it a round £100 instead of £99.99 as a result of a truncated recurring decimal. Who ends up paying the extra penny is up to chance)
